When coaching clients to delegate the details (projects, tasks, and chores) that overwhelm them, there are three common objections that I hear.
Objection 1: Cost
A client has an online business that has a loyal customer base. He sells a lot of merchandise, and has been doing all the order processing by himself! This means taking care of the order fulfillment, the shipping, and the customer service - all on his own! He was reluctant to delegate order fulfillment to a company that supplies such services because he was afraid it would cost too much money.
Delegating this type of ongoing task to a service company certainly will cost some money, but it s an investment in the client s piece of mind and the company s future. When the details of order fulfillment are taken care of, he is free to focus on what he does best - business development. The business then grows, more money comes in, and the cost of the fulfillment company is more than made up for in sales and growth.
Objection 2: Perfectionism
Another client is a single mom who is a partner at a top-notch law firm. She works a lot of hours, and does her best to spend quality time with her two teenagers. But she was also spending a lot of time stressing - and I mean stressing - about how clean her house was (or wasn t). She was reluctant to delegate house cleaning to a professional cleaning person or to her kids because she thought it would take too much time to explain how she likes it all done.
This is perfectionism - she s not willing to let go of a task and let someone run with it. This client felt that if the house wasn t cleaned her way, it wouldn t be cleaned right. In order for her to delegate this, she had to trust in a professional cleaning service, and in her kids, and just let go of the responsibility altogether.
As a result, this client has found that her relationship with her kids has improved. They certainly did object when she first delegated certain daily responsibilities to them, but her stress level has decreased tremendously and that has had a very positive effect on her relationship with her kids.
Objection 3: Taking Care of Others
Another client is the president of a professional organization and is in charge of a big annual event. As the lead person on this event, she needs to delegate a lot of work, or it simply won t get done! But she had a lot of guilt about delegating projects without first "cleaning them up." Instead of handing over a file and saying "Here you go, this is what I need, please figure it out," she was spinning her wheels trying to clean up the file and make the project as simple as possible.
In this example, the client is not really delegating, because she s too busy taking care of the people helping her. It s very considerate, but doesn t move her project forward. Politely delegating projects, chores, and tasks is not mean, rude, or unreasonable - it s necessary, especially in the position that this client was in. Without delegation, nothing would get done.

The whole question of dieting or not dieting is inseparable from us, women, because of our ambivalent relationship with our body--we love it and we hate it. In essence, mind has been exiled from body. I have known heavy women who face their unhealthy weight problem by eating more; I have seen women who are by all standards slender and beautiful agonize over the slightest thickening of midriff and thighs. For most women, our waists are never small enough, our bellies never flat enough and dieting seems to be the golden route to a kind of cultural icon of perfection.

We worry excessively about every ounce we gain or we give in uncontrollably to eating binges. This hunger or denial of hunger is the reason for the dramatic increase in obesity in North America and also the reason for yet another weight loss book on the market. As Jennifer Workman states so emphatically in "Stop Your Cravings", "Why are we the most diet-crazed country in the world and yet also the most overweight, and apparently the most frustrated by our failure (xiv)?"

It is obvious that diets recommending food deprivation do not work. Weight issues involve more than food issues. Weight issue is a body acceptance issue and our obsession with weight is a symptom of our inability to honor the body, to give the body its due as a living, individual being. The authors of three books on the market explore this issue of body acceptance and provide suggestions on how women can re-think their relationships with their bodies.

In their book, "It s Not About Food," authors Carol Emery Normandi and Laurelee Roark, founders of Beyond Hunger Inc, state that women in our culture " have an enormous pressure on them to be perfect"(6) and it is this pressure that is creating eating disorders, addictive behavior, depression and even death in women. Our hunger is not for food, but for internal guidance--"having the right to choose what we feel is right for ourselves and learning to hear the voice within that knows what we need"(16). Listening to this internal guidance means being comfortable with who are, even if it means accepting a body that is ten pounds more than what we think it should be.

This re-focusing on the internal and spiritual basis of hunger and food addiction certainly sheds new light on the meaning of "dieting." A diet traditionally carries the meaning of food deprivation for the purpose of shedding excess weight. Unfortunately as well, the word also carries the connotation of starvation and hunger. In this sense, a diet is only a temporary, band-aid solution to the problem of obesity. To arrive at long term success, we have to look at the diet not as a temporary measure, but as a lifelong revision in attitude and lifestyle, which is only possible when we can get to the root of our ambivalence about our bodies.

Such is the case in "Love Hunger" authored by a group of expert physicians. In one case delineated in the book, a patient recognizes that her relationship with food comes from an unresolved conflict with her parents. When patient Barbara comes to realize that her issue with food is about her relationship with her parents--an authoritarian father and an overly-dependent mother, she begins the journey towards change and resolution. As a child, Barbara functioned like a "scapegoat spouse" (29) to both her parents. Her problem, rooted in family dysfunction which created a vacuum in her heart, is typical of many overeaters :"people with heart hunger will stuff their stomachs"(30).

The same suggestion that we look beyond the prescriptive diet to the person s total body consciousness can be seen in "Addiction to Perfection," in which Marion Woodman examines how the eating problems of the modern woman are rooted in an addiction that deprives her of being able to love herself for what she is. The problem that confronts a woman addicted to perfection is that she cannot accept herself for being human. The body in this instance is often sacrificed to the idealism of the mind. Only through bodywork and soulwork can she redeem her center--when her body is not pitted against her mind but can coexist as one unit: "I am body and mind. I may be tossed about like a sailboat in a cyclone, but through thick and thin I am able to hold my standpoint here at the center because I now have eyes to see and ears to hear" and " I can surrender. Life can happen; life can pour through me."(75)

The solution suggested by these authors comes from re-defining the parameters of perfection. What is a perfect woman? A perfect body? Perfect--by whose standards and definition? We need to understand perfection not in terms of standards dictated by cultural media, but by our own internal guidance. This means that a woman is perfect when she is empowered enough to choose the avenue by which she defines herself. That s when dieting or not dieting becomes an irrelevant issue because she has worked out the dynamics of healthy body and purposeful living for herself.

The third type of Mesothelioma, which is Pericardial Mesothelioma, attacks the heart, as well as the lining surrounding the heart. Pericardial Mesothelioma is the most rare form of all three diseases. The symptoms of this type of cancer are somewhat similar to those of Pleural Mesothelioma, but also include chest pain, heart palpitations, and a nagging cough. Other preventive programs are directed towards the prevention of prematurity; reducing exposure of pregnant women to virus and other infections; recognition and treatment of bacterial infection of the maternal reproductive and urinary tracts; avoiding unnecessary exposure to X-rays, drugs and medications; and the control of diabetes, anemia and nutritional deficiencies.

Of great importance are optimal well being prior to conception, adequate prenatal care, and protecting infants from accidents or injury.

The best prescription for having a healthy baby is to have regular prenatal care and good nutrition, and to avoid smoking, alcohol consumption, and drug abuse. Other forms of prevention include:

A special serum given after each delivery can prevent the production of antibodies.

If antibodies develop during a first pregnancy, or if antibody production is not prevented, the developing baby is monitored closely. If necessary, a transfusion may be given to the infant in the womb or an exchange transfusion may be given after birth, removing and replacing a large volume of the infant s blood.

Be vaccinated against German measles (rubella) before becoming pregnant.

To prevent CP, prospective parents should follow these guidelines:

* Get regular prenatal care.

* Expectant mothers and, in some cases, expectant fathers should get a simple blood test to determine their Rh factor. An incompatibility between mother and child usually does not cause problems with the first pregnancy. And an immunization given to the mother after delivery of an Rh positive child can prevent problems for future pregnancies.

* Women should be immunized against rubella (German measles) before getting pregnant.

* Women who are expecting or who plan to become pregnant should try to avoid toxoplasmosis by not eating undercooked pork or lamb and by keeping away from cat litter boxes.

* Parents should follow safety precautions such as using child safety seats in vehicles to prevent head injury and having children wear safety equipment, such as helmets, for bike riding or other activities.

* Parents should seek treatment right away for a baby who is jaundiced. If phototherapy isn t effective, as in some severe cases, a special form of blood transfusion can correct the jaundiced condition.

The cause of cerebral palsy (CP) sometimes is not known. However, links have been identified between CP and certain conditions during pregnancy, birth, and early childhood. Some of these can be prevented; some cannot.

You can help prevent CP before and during your pregnancy by adopting and maintaining healthy habits.

* Eat nutritious foods.
* Do not smoke.
* Avoid exposure to harmful substances.
* See your health professional regularly.

Also, help prevent CP in your young child by minimizing your child s risk for sustaining a brain injury.

* Take measures to prevent accidents.
* Make sure you are familiar with the signs of jaundice in newborns.
* Know how to prevent lead poisoning.
* Keep your child away from people who have serious contagious illnesses, such as meningitis.

Physical fitness; I am sure this term means different things to different people. It conjers up memories of junior high gym class and specific tests or drills we did to determine our fitness level.
Many years later, I am still amazed at how many different ways fitness is measured. To some, it is the ability to run long distances. For others, it is the ability to do x amount of one task and finish an obstacle course under a certain time.
For most it is simply the way you look. This, combined with good muscle tone and perhaps even the way you carry yourself, represent good fit qualities.
For me, physical fitness represents one of the three aspects of fitness. I think it involves efficient movement patterns to allow the body to be successful. I feel it should be measured individually, yet have a common basis for measurement.
Every individual needs to compare themselves to themselves; measure their achievements to their past experiences. Now, I think it is great to learn from successful people around us and try to achieve results similar to other trailblazers in a particular area of interest.
However, you vs. you ought to be the motto.
I feel we, as a society, spend too much time comparing ourselves and our successes to someone else. Whether it is the money they make, the house they live in, the car they drive, the amount of happiness in their life or how fit or in shape they are.
More time ought to be spent doing things that feed on our individual passions and seeing in what direction that leads us. Worrying about another s achievements or aspirations could lead us in directions we were never meant to go and therefore could stifle potential success and happiness.
What are you excited about? How do you want to look and feel? How do you measure success? Fitness?
Once you figure this out you will have your measuring stick.
What is the basis for fitness? This needs to be an exercise program that allows you to be successful - mentally, physically and financially.

As we mature, we begin to develop poor movement habits, postures and compensations due to communication changes between body and brain. This is usually the result of daily work duties, hobbies, eating habits and bad advice or other learned information.
Many exercise programs just enhance these bad habits and lead to sub-par and unwanted levels of fitness. Many begin to blame old age, lack of time and genetics as the culprits.
In reality, it is ignorance that s right, ignorance.
Before you email me and call me bad names, ignorance is simply a lack of knowledge. The biggest problem I see with clients physical fitness level is their lack of knowledge.
People just need to be reminded of how to move properly again, like when we were younger. I would like to tweak the Beach Boy s hit song and say wouldn t it be nice if we were younger- then we would move so much better. This would mostly be because we would be moving efficiently, not just because our body is newer and fresher.
Re-setting the nervous system is done by moving in three planes of motion, (i.e. multiple directions), and working groups of muscles (muscle synergies) vs. isolated muscles. It is also important to work on balance, (one leg, reaching with arms or legs outside of balance comfort zone and exercising on different surfaces) as well as working through your available muscle and joint range of motion.
Full-body, multi-plane exercise routines will stimulate the brain for improved movement patterns, posture and injury prevention.
I cannot finish this article without mentioning the benefit of weight loss with this type of routine. Increasing energy and metabolism (due to nervous system stimulation and improved muscle mass and strength) will aid the weight loss enhancement.
Proper fueling or nutrition will, of course, help with weight loss and ideal weight maintenance. This is best achieved with portion control (portions size of fist per item) and protein to carbohydrate ratios (2.5 grams of carbs for every gram of protein).
Keep sweets, fats and oils to a minimum.
Your body will operate in proportion to how you train it and how you feed it; therefore, why not teach it to look, feel and perform how you want it to take control of your physical fitness.
